چکیده

This manuscript presents the analysis of data from multiple ground- and space-based sensors in North American region before, during, after 12 October 2021 geomagnetic storm. Total electron content (TEC) density show formation equatorward propagation a mid-latitude trough at ∼50°N followed by appearance wider depletion (∼15° latitude) lower latitudes. During recovery phase on 13th, edge this settled around 30° latitude exhibited steep gradient. By 14th, sharp boundary had disappeared. Near small-scale irregularities formed. The impact these was observed within Global Positioning System as elevated rate TEC index (ROTI) presented strong 35 MHz scintillations cosmic radio sources well spread-F ionograms digisonde systems. GPS 35-MHz demonstrated that irregularity narrowly confined (≲5° wide) near region. scintillation also showed were moving relatively slowly ∼7 m s−1, likely toward southeast. Density velocity measurements conditions highly favorable to gradient drift instability (GDI) with one-dimensional growth estimated be ∼0.01 s−1. Since persisted for many hours, more than sufficient GDI considered primary driver case.

Investigation of the effects of geomagnetic storms on ionospheric irregularities using the combination of ground-based GNSS and SWARM satellites

Geomagnetic storms are one of the main causes of ionospheric perturbations in different sizes, depending on their intensity, which could disturb radio signals passing through this medium. On September 6-12, 2017, the sudden storm commencement (SSC) was the most massive geomagnetic storm of the year due to the X9 solar flare caused by a coronal mass ejection (CME). IMF-Bz and Dst values increase...

Simulation Study of a Positive Ionospheric Storm Phase Observed at Millstone Hill

Simulation results from the NRL ionospheric model SAMI2 indicate that the changes in the F-region over Millstone Hill during the geomagnetic storm beginning on 3 April 2004 are primarily due to the influence of a long-lasting eastward electric field, as was previously suggested by Huang et al. [2005]. A simulation of the storm day agrees well with the observational data and shows that, compared...

Dayside midlatitude ionospheric response to storm time electric fields: A case study for 7 September 2002

[1] With the storm of 7–8 September 2002 as a study case, we demonstrate that an ionospheric model driven by a suitable storm time convection electric field can reproduce the F region dayside density enhancements associated with the ionospheric storm positive phase. The ionospheric model in this case is the Utah State University Time Dependent Ionospheric Model (TDIM); the electric field model ...

Robust Detection of Ionospheric Irregularities

The Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) will provide real-time differential GPS corrections and integrity information for aircraft navigation use. The most stringent application of this system will be precision approach, where the system guides the aircraft to within a few hundred feet of the ground. Precision approach operations require the use of differential ionospheric corrections. WAAS mu...

Observations of the ionospheric response to the 15 December 2006 geomagnetic storm: Long-duration positive storm effect

[1] The long-duration positive ionospheric storm effect that occurred on 15 December 2006 is investigated using a combination of ground-based Global Positioning System (GPS) total electron content (TEC), TOPEX and Jason-1 TEC, and topside ionosphere/ plasmasphere TEC, GPS radio occultation, and tiny ionospheric photometer (TIP) observations from the Constellation Observing System for Meteorolog...
